Everyday, I get asked the question, “Where do you find all these things?” The answer to that question is that it’s often unpredictable. Here I am pictured going through the attic of a vintage dressmaker who received her degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1953. Her mother before her was a VP at the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. There were truly so many treasures in this attic from both mother and daughter, including dress patterns, books and college theses and unfinished sewing projects as well as some 1930-1970s day dresses, gowns, woolens, and knits.
Not every garment here can be saved, unfortunately. Attics are a volatile place to store textiles, being that they’re subject to extreme heat and cold, but I try to save as much as I can! I clean, restore, and renew each piece to maintain its original integrity.
